Summer 2005

Summer 2005 is officially over......this is the archival web site of our 2005 activities....

Yes, Summer 2005 is long gone and has been consigned to the annals of history...check out our archived web sit for our 2005 activities

So, without further ado: here is what we did for Summer 2005.

As you can see from the above animations, the weather here will change from being very pleasant in early July, to brutally hot in August, back to being pleasant again in September. There should be NO SNOW here in summer. Our weather is bad, but it's not that bad.

As has become our custom, before we can start Summer 2005, we have a few questions to note. These questions, and many others, will be answered of the course of the season:

  •  Will there be peace in Iraq????? Answer...Nope!!!!

  •  Will Weapons of Mass Distraction be found in Iraq????  Answer....Still not a drop of the stuff. Bush and Co have long since given up using WMD as the pretext for the illegal invasion of Iraq....

  •  Who will we be at war with by the end of Summer 2004??? Answer....Surprisingly, no one else thus far. Mind you, Bush and Co have made such a screw up of Iraq, we really don't need another war just yet. Mind you, the saber rattling against Iran and Syria especially is starting to get more and more vocal!!!!

  •  Will the economy still be heading south courtesy of GWB Jr???? Answer.....The economy is really bad shape. Hurricane Katrina has really made things bad!!!!

  •  Where will the webmaster be working?????? Answer....This one is easy...still at CSI in Valparaiso, Indiana.

  •  How will the US economy be faring???? Answer...See above....

July 1, 2005: Wedding Anniversary

It's our wedding anniversary. This was our ten year anniversary. Unfortunately, we couldn't actually go out on the night of the first...some lunatic college in Nebraska had scheduled Lisa final Master's exams at 8am on Saturday, July 2. So, needless to say, we could actually go out that night. So, instead, we spent a very quiet night at home. While Lisa studied, the webmaster did his best to stay out of her hair.

But, on Saturday, we did party...instead of going to our regular anniversary restaurant [aka, Charlie's by the Lake], we decided to go to a new place in downtown Omaha. So, the place we chose was a place called "the French Cafe", a very, very nice restaurant!!!!

Unfortunately, the night ended all too quickly. But, it was a great weekend and, without exaggeration, the company was fantastic!!!!

Happy 10 Year Anninversary!!!!........

July 4, 2005

July Fourth is Independence day. The day the US of A kicked the English out of their country. Something, at least one of us here thinks, Australia should have done a long time ago.

This year, both of us were in Omaha. We also didn't have a party either...that happened earlier within the neighborhood. But, we did spend a very pleasant day, just pottering around the house, doing gardening, watching DVD's and that kind of stuff. It might sound boring, but given that Lisa had just finished her Masters degree, it was just what the doctor ordered. Plus, the webmaster had to head back to Valpo on Tuesday the 5, so no one wanted a very busy night. Finally, we also had to start to prepare for the arrival of the webmasters parents......

Anyway, with what has now become a tradition, here are some photos of the outside of our house...hey, it's the beginning of summer, and things are still reasonably green.....as usual, double click on the images to see the full size....

And so, that was Independence Day for 2005....and on goes summer....

July 31, 2005:  Almanac Entry

This is just an almanac entry. Over this weekend, Lisa and the webmaster basically spent the whole weekend getting the house ready for the webmasters parents, who arrive on Saturday August 6. With all the work that's been done over the last few weeks, this was not necessarily an easy task. There were closets to be emptied, garages to be cleaned, etc. Plus, we also just finally received our dining room table...finally, somewhere to sit and eat a meal. The only final tasks before the webmasters parents for the final cleaning and, hopefully, new blinds to be installed in the dining room....

Here are some snaps of our house in various states of "disassembly"....

The photo of the car is there because this was the last weekend we had the Toyota...out with the 1999 Toyota, in with a 2005 Lexus. We won't pick the new car up until Monday [8/1], so you'll just have to wait to see photos of the new car...

August 6, 2005:  Almanac Entry

And so, the big day arrived. Lisa and the webmaster spent the last couple of days prior to this doing the final cleaning of the house. This is just to prove that we can actually have a clean house......

Mind you, we did cheat....we actually had a cleaning service come in and do the final cleaning. Hey, so what, we cheated...who cares!!!!

August 6 Thru August 14, 2005: Omaha Nebraska

As per the previous posting, the webmasters parents [John and Rae Burton] landed in Omaha on Saturday, August 6, for a week. As opposed to previous years, there were no travel plans arranged for outside Omaha. There were a couple of reasons for this: the first was that the webmaster actually had to work (bummer that!!!!); the second was that the primary reason for the trip was for the webmasters folks to attend Lisa's graduation on Friday, August 12. So, rather than being off gallivanting across the countryside, we spent a very pleasant week in Omaha, just pottering around the house, watching the soaps, going out for dinner, etc. All in all it was a fantastic week, and both Lisa and the webmaster are glad that John and Rae could make it.

Okay, that was the summary. Here are the details. For a map summary of the places we went to, please refer to the following map. Remember, double click on it to see the full sized map:

On Saturday [8/6], we picked the folks up from the airport. After a quick spot of lunch, it was back home to amaze the webmasters parents with the changes that have been made to the house since they were last here last year. Then, dinner at an Omaha steak house....yep, it's the one thing that Omaha is genuinely famous for...it's steaks!!!!! After that, we spent a fantastic evening outside, while Lisa and the Webmaster played musical chairs with the hoses....man, gotta water that lawn!!!!!Mind you, we do have to say, that Omaha threw on an absolutely gorgeous evening. The joke about Omaha's weather is quite real...it's either too hot or too cold, except for about six weeks of the year  when the weather is absolutely perfect [normally, three weeks in spring, and three weeks in the Fall]. Saturday 8/6 was one of those nights/day....

On Sunday [8/7], it was stinking hot. So, the original plan of walking up to our local bar was shelved.....plan B was then implemented...we drove instead. We caught up with a couple of good friends, all of which have met the webmaster's parents before....

To answer what will be an obvious question...no, the webmaster is not growing another beard...he was just to lazy to shave....

The rest of the week, until Thursday, was spent putzing around the house and going to different restaurants and bars [yes, we know, it sounds like a typical Burton family outing]. While this may sound boring, it actually was not. With the webmaster working from home and Lisa on vacation, we actually got to spend a lot of good quality time together. Anyway, that's our story and we're sticking to it....

On Thursday afternoon. Lisa's folks turned up in Omaha in preparation for Lisa's the big graduation event the next day. Need less to say, it was then time to go out for supper.....

And so dawned Friday...the big day. Lisa's graduation. While the webmaster had to work in the morning, Lisa and Stephen's parents were able to ramble about the house. Mind you, there was no rest for Lisa. Whether she admits it or not, she was starting get the typical "pre-ceremony" jitters. I can't say I blame her!!!! Anyway, Lisa's folks arrived around 10:30am. By the time the webmaster showered and got dressed, it was 12noon. Just in time to take some pre-ceremony photos.

Then, at 12:30pm, our two Limos arrived [okay, okay...taxis, not limos....but Limo's sound better] and it was time to head downtown to the Omaha Civic Center for Lisa to walk the walk...but, of course, not before some more "Kodak moments"

Now that the Kodak moments were taken, it was time for Lisa and the rest of the clan to split up. Lisa went to the "subterranean"  entrance, while the "throng" went through the main entrance....it was now time for Lisa to "walk the walk".....

For those of you who are curious, the following pictures are scanned in copies of the Graduation Ceremony for UNO [University of Nebraska at Omaha]

After the ceremony, it was off the road to the Doubletree Hotel for a celebratory drink for Lisa. Hey, it's not every day that someone gets a Masters Of Science in Special Education!!!!! Also, we had an hour and a half to kill before our "Limo's" arrived to take us to the restaurant for supper....

The restaurant chosen by Lisa is a place called Gorats [and, no, it is not pronounced as GO RATS!!!!]. It's a place frequented by Warren Buffet and Bill Gates when they are in town/ For those of you who've been asleep for the last twenty years, Warren and Bill are, respectively, the second and richest men on the face on the planet. Besides the allure of seeing Bill and Warren, Gorats was chosen as it's also owned by the same people who own our local bar [Lighthouse Bar & Grill]. We were very pleased when they [Steve and Debbie] were able to join us for these festivities. The restaurant has actually been in the family for some 70+ years and is one of the oldest restaurants in Omaha!!!! It is especially known for its steaks...which were delicious!!!!!

Unfortunately, Warren and Bill did not show up the night we were there. Imagine that...the nerve of them not to turn up for Lisa's graduation celebration. It may have had something to do with the fact that we didn't invite them. Damn technicality!!!! But, we can say this....we can understand why the go there when their in town...the food is great and it's not that expensive!!!!! As you can probably get from this commentary, a great night was had by all. It was fantastic that both sets of parents could be present to help celebrate Lisa's graduation...especially John and Rae who traveled half way around the world just be in Omaha for the occasion. Words cannot express how pleased and gratified we were that both sets of parents chose to be here for the occasion and share in the festivities!!!!!

Congratulations Lisa!!!!!! A job well done!!!!.............

Having survived Lisa's graduation and subsequent festivities, it was time on Saturday [8/13] to have the obligatory shopping spree. We chose the new Village Point mall as our destination this time. This is a new mall out in west Omaha. While it's basically only for women's clothing [go figure], it also has some eight bars, which is fine for husbands. Before the shopping began, we had lunch at one of them, namely Cheeseburger in Paradise. This is a chain owned by Jimmy Buffet [of Margaritaville fame...and yes, a nephew of Warren Buffet].  While the food was "okay", the margarita's were fantastic!!!!

Alas, as with everything, all good things must come to and end. On Sunday [8/14]. John and Rae had to depart Omaha to return to the land down under. It sucks when the real world has to be reentered. The webmaster and Lisa are really pleased and happy that they were able to come to Omaha to spend time with them. WE only hope that they enjoyed themselves as much as we did having them here. But, this is only a temporary parting as the webmaster and Lisa will be visiting Australia next year, as well as John and Rae potentially visiting the US of A again sometime next year. So, this was really a matter of "until next time".........

Hot of the press....September 19, 2005.......

This really is hot off the press...here is Lisa's official graduation photo......

August 15, 2005: Lisa's Birthday

Lisa's birthday...after the frenetic pace of the previous week, the webmaster and Lisa looked forward to a reasonably quiet day to celebrate Lisa's birthday. Hey, the webmaster had even scheduled to take a vacation day!!!! But, as with all "plans of mice and men", things went astray. Lisa had a doctors appointment at 9am [there went the sleep in until late] and then had to go to work [school] to prepare for the new school year. Finally, the webmaster was on a work conference call from 10am until 2:30pm. So much for a "nice, quiet day"....

While Lisa's birthday did not go exactly to plan, we did manage to do some celebrating. We went up to our local bar [Lighthouse] for a couple of restorative cordials with a few games of darts [which the webmaster lost convincingly], while Lisa played a couple of games of Keno [gambling...she also lost!!!!]. Then, it was out for supper to our favorite, local Italian restaurant.....

Happy birthday Lisa..................

And so summer rolls on. The webmaster had to return to Valparaiso the day after Lisa's birthday. Lisa also had the fun task of having to return to work for the beginning of the new school year.....like I said, and summer goes on......

August 22, 2005:  Almanac Entry Random Musings

This is just a random musing posting. It just goes to show what happens when the webmaster is in Valparaiso gets board....

The webmaster has made an executive decision. He is going to start to post some older photos, some of which have never seen the light of day before. They are typically the old, traditional photos. So, whenever the webmaster gets board in Valpo, he is going to scan a couple of the older photos and post them here!!!!! So, here goes the first batch of photos.....remember, these photos are historical, People have changed since they were taken back in the early 90's. Plus, we've also found our original engagement...ain't history fun!!!!

As usual, double click on the photos to view the full image size...and now you'll have to wait until next month before more historical photos are published....the webmaster in Valparaiso, Indiana, is out of old photos to scan [phew says Lisa].....and so, summer 2005 rolls on....

September 5, 2005: Labor Day

Ahh yes, the unofficial end of summer. The weather only goes downhill from here on.

And what did we do this year.....basically, the same as last year, which is nothing. Mind you, instead of going to the first Nebraska College football game as we did last year, this year we simply went up to our local bar to watch the game. While Nebraska may have beaten Maine [25-3], it was not a terribly "comprehensive" nor "overwhelming". Considering that Maine is a Division II team, it was actually quite bad game for Nebraska....

Other than that, it was goofing around the house, doing yard work and that kind of stuff.......it may sound boring, but it sure as heck was not. Time just to watch movies and putter around the house. Nothing wrong with that!!!1

And, on marches summer.....

September 8, 2005: Football 2005 Season!!!:

Yeassssss. The long hot summer desert of real sport will finally be over. Gone will be the useless days and nights listening to mindless baseball scores and/or baseball strikes. As usual, we have our annual Football Pool. Unfortunately, non-paying players cannot access the site....oh, the price of technology...However, you can see how the previous years have gone by visiting this link: Football Central

September 11, 2005:

This is not really a day to celebrate, but rather one to pause and reflect on what happened on September 11, 2001. Where were you at 8:47am EDT when the world changed.

We also need to reflect on where we are in our battle, no war, against the cowards and their backers who perpetrated these cowardly and dastardly  acts.

September 11 - September 14 , 2005:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water [at least for the webmaster], boom, along comes yet another health issue. It must be that the webmaster is getting too old for this game. Anyway, on Sunday September 11, the webmaster suffered a relapse of the ulcerous growth on his esophagus. This time, however, we knew what to do. Basically, get the hell out of dodge and head to the emergency room at Methodist Hospital. This time, however, there was no failure of the kidneys, so it was a matter of treating the ulcerous growths, and then getting kicked out of hospital!!!! Mind you, it doesn't stop it from being pretty scary. But, this time, the cause was clear...DIET!!!! The webmaster can tolerate absolutely no fatty or greasy food....talk about getting old!!!!

In a kind o sick, perverse way, it actually worked out for the best. Just after the webmaster was released from hospital, it was time to start the final "home" project of the year. This way, the webmaster was actually home while it was done. Hey, it may sound kind of dumb, but it did really actually work out. The last job for the year was having a set of blinds replaced, as well as a window and a door replaced because of dry rot [imagine that happening in Omaha].....

There of course will be pictures of the work as soon as the webmaster returns from wonderful Valparaiso, which he had to return to on Saturday, September 17.

And so marches on Summer......

September 19, 2005:  Almanac Entry Random Musings

As promised, the webmaster has been reviewing old photos he deems to be suitable for republishing here on the web. This time, the photos are in two lots. The first are from Lisa's Hen Party, just before we were married. So, these are circa May 1995 in Moline, Illinois:

And no, I cannot remember whose baby it is above. It may be a niece/nephew, but the webmaster really has no recollection. It may have just been a stray left on our doorstep...but, it is definitely NOT Lisa and the webmasters....

The second bunch of photos is from the same time period. this time, it from the Moline International Bike, which used to be held over the Memorial Day long weekend [i.e., the last weekend in May]. Again, this was just before we were married in 1995......

Well, basically that's it for summer 2005. The webmaster will be returning to Omaha on Friday, September 23. By that time, it will be Fall/Autumn, and time for a whole new bunch of stuff......

September 22, 2005: End of Summer:
