Spring 2009

Spring 2009 is officially over...this is the archived version of our Spring 2009 Activities.....

Spring 2009 is officially over and this sub-web is closed for business.

Well, as you know, spring is here in Omaha can have many, varied weather patterns. It is not unusual to have snow, we always have lots of rain and then there's the odd tornados or three. Plus, to tell the truth, the temperatures can be up and down like a yo-yo. To put it mildly, the temperature can be very interesting.

So, in keeping with previous years, we are asking several questions for Spring 2009 in Omaha.

  • Will we get snow in spring [i.e. when will the last snow fall]??? Answer....This one is easy. No snow fell during Spring!!!!

  • How much rain will we have this season???? Answer....Heaps. It's been raining almost every night for the last month. Great for the lawn and garden, but lousy if you want to do anything outside!!!!!

  • How many tornados will we have this season??? Answer....No warnings!!!!

  • What will the highest temperature be (i.e., when can we start wearing shorts again)???  Answer....See below!!!!

  • What will the lowest temperature for the season be (i.e., how long will we have to keep our winter coats out)??? Answer....See below!!!!

  • How long will the war with Iraq take????? Answer....Even with Obama in office,, the ware goes on. While the situation has stabilized somewhat, there are still daily suicide bombings which kill and maim dozens. The most important thing to watch begins at the end of June 2009 when the bulk of US troops leave the cities and full security is borne by the Iraqis. Watch this space for further developments!!!!!

  • When do we start attacking North Korea??? Answer....North Korea is rattling sabers again, conducting nuclear tests and long range missile tests. It seems hard to fathom exactly what they hope to achieve by doing all this except to deepen their own isolation. Even their long term patrons the Chinese and the Russians are not happy with them!!!!

All these questions, and many others, will be answered before the end of spring.

So, what's on the agenda for the Burton's in spring 2009....

Start of Spring...yippee....we've survived winter.

And so begins Spring 2009....

Monday, March 23, 2009: First Spring 2009 Storm

Of course, with the start of spring comes the end of snow (hopefully). But, it also brings the start of Spring Storm season, which in Omaha, means tornadoes. And, on Monday March 23, 2009, this is exactly what happened. The webmaster was outside getting the mail when we entered a stage of a storm known as the zone of silence, when the wind drops completely and you can hear a pin drop 50' away, which is exactly what happened. So, what did the webmaster do....easy, he ran like hell back to the house with the expectations that he would be going to the basement pretty damn soon. This is the storm system that was moving in our direction....

Before the sirens went off, the webmaster captured this quick video....

Pre storm Video

Then, the sirens did start going and the webmaster headed down to the basement. Lisa was at a meeting a couple of miles away and head to head to the bathrooms, as that was the convention centre's "tornado shelter". We luckily avoided the confirmed F3 tornado, but man did it rain and hail. After the hail was over, it looked like it had been snowing, and this was with golf ball sized hail stones.

Thankfully, we didn't loose any windows and/or sky lights. Mind you, for a couple of minutes there it felt and sounded like we were going to lose at least something with glass in it!!!

We have no now survived the first "official spring 2009" storm. Lets see what comes next!!!......

Monday, April 6, thru Friday, April 10, 2009: Lisa Spring Break

The annual rite of Spring for all teachers. A week off after a long winter when they don't have to be at school and there are no kids!!!! Lisa has always looked forward to this, and this year was no exception. What was the exception was that we didn't go away for the week, for a whole bunch of reasons.

While the basic tenet of the week was for Lisa to be able to sleep in and relax, it was actually a fairly busy week, with lots of issues scheduled to be resolved precisely because Lisa was off and had time available. Some of the issues were:

  • Visit to INS. The webmaster's Green Card expires in August of this year, so the time had come to start the process of getting a replacement card. So, we scheduled a meeting with INS on Monday, 4/6, to start the process and fill out the appropriate forms, etc. This "meeting" turned out to be a complete waste of time as the facility we were directed to go to does not process the required forms and that the forms can be completed on-line anyway. So, after wasting the morning at the INS facility, we were able to complete the appropriate forms, fork over money, and get the process started, all from the comfort of home.

  • Spare bathroom. This is an on-going saga. As some of you may remember, we had water damage done to the ceiling of the spare bathroom because of a leaky skylight. Well, the skylight was repaired last year and it was now time to have a contractor come in and repair the drywall damage. It now looks like a million bucks in comparison of what it used to look like. Now, all we need to do is get the bathroom repainted and everything will be perfect.

  • Taxes. Enough said. Taxes are due on April 15, so we had to spend a considerable amount of time getting all our records up-to-date. and ready for filing with IRS. Needless to say, we did get it all done. And, this year, the IRS is actually giving us a refund!!!!

  • Plumbing. Our garbage disposal unit had ceased to function a few weeks ago, so we needed to get that replaced. Also, while the plumber was here, we got him to look at a malfunctioning facet and a clogged show drain.

  • Massages. On the plus side, Lisa was able to get two massages during the week. The first was a regular message, while the second was a "hot rock" massage. Lisa enjoyed both massages!!!

Because of the number of contractors floating through the house, we had a major clean up operation of the house. Here are some photos of our "clean" house....

As for the water damage to the spare bathroom, here are two "pre work" photos....

Here is a single photo after the work had just been completed:

Despite all the work going on, Lisa was at least able to relax during the week, watch her soaps and generally enjoy being a "lady of leisure" for a week!!!!

And that was Lisa's spring break for 2009....

Friday, April 10, 2009: Good Friday

Where will we be for Good Friday 2009...

This one is easy. We were in Omaha, and we did absolutely nothing. Well, except for the fact that we saw a good friend of ours, Steph Sinclair, who came over to help the webmaster fix a faulty lawn mover. That, and the fact that the contractor finished his work on our spare bathroom water damage, was all we did. Apart from that, it was very quiet!!!!!

Wednesday, April 15, 2009: Tax Day

Still not quite sure why we included this one is here. This is the day that every tax payer hates: Tax Day. All tax payers must have their tax returns either into the IRS or the envelopment must be stamped by today. The even crazier thing is that 33 million Americans will spend today racing about to either get filings complete, or file for extensions. All post office's are open until midnight to accommodate these idiots. The really dumb thing is: this date DOES NOT CHANGE!!!!. We all know it's coming, year after year. How much brain power does it take to be a little bit organized (especially with the IRS...the crowd that brought down Al Capone). Screw this midnight crap!!!!

Will we be filing on time????The answer to this one is easy...of course things were completed on time, and this year, they [the IRS] actually have to give us money back!!!!

Monday, April 20, 2009: Rites of Spring

You know that Spring is officially here when it's time to start mowing the lawn. After putting things off for a couple of weeks while our lawn mower was repaired, it was time to bite the bullet and cut the grass for the first time. The reason that you delay starting the season as long as possible is extremely easy to understand: the sooner you start cutting the grass, the longer you have to do it for!!!

By the way, this rite of spring is quite important as it means that the weather is improving so that things are growing (grass, plants, flowers, etc). It sure as heck makes a difference after six (6) months of winter and nothing but white and grey!!!!

As with previous years, after completing the mowing, it was time to take some photos of the house, especially of our flowering apple tree. This tree only flowers for a couple of days before the wind in Nebraska blows all the flowers away. For a few days it is really pretty...but, if you blink, you'll miss it!!!!! And guess what, it was flowering when the webmaster was cutting the grass!!!!

So. here we go with the photos:

On a neighborhood level, here is a link to a quick video....

Rites of Spring 2009 Video

Hey, we know that not everything is flowering and a lot of plants still look dormant [i.e., dead], and that things are only just starting to turn green and grow, but it's still better than it looked just a month ago!!!!

And this is how we know that Spring is actually here and not just some rumor floating around....

Thursday, May 14, 2009: Spring Garden Cleaning

With the start of spring and the lawn mowing season comes the need to clean out the old dead wood to let the new growth begin. So, today, it was out with old, and in with the new. Several plants were cut back severely [hopefully they will come back]. We also had five [5] new Hostas planted in lieu of three existing plants that were accidently pulled out.

As opposed to our  last posting a month ago, pretty much everything is now green. It may sound puerile, but it is so nice to see the color green after six months of nothing but snow and freezing weather.

And yes, you groan, there are photos. Hey, we don't pay for bandwidth!!!!

Follow the link below for a panoramic view of spring from our back deck...

And so, with the garden cleaned up, we are definitely ready for the rest of spring and the coming of summer....

And on rolls Spring 2009....

Monday, May 25, 2009: Memorial Day

The official start to the BBQ and driving seasons. This is also supposed to be a day (and weekend) when those men and women who died in service of the USA are supposed to be remembered. Unfortunately, it has been so caught up in commercialism that the actual day is more just celebrated bye the "Memorial Day Sales" and "Specials" that what it was supposed to be remembered for. By the way, for those of you down under, the closed equivalent holiday is Anzac Day on April 25.

So, what did we do. Well, the weekend stared inauspiciously enough. The Friday was Lisa's last official day of school, but unfortunately she couldn't go out and celebrate as the webmaster had a minor medical procedure on the Friday afternoon. He had yet another "Upper Endoscopy" procedure which involved the use of anesthesia, which meant that Lisa had to come and pick him up from the doctors office and look after him while he recovered from the anesthesia. Not exactly an exciting way to spend the evening of the last day of the school year.

For the rest of the weekend, we spent the time goofing around the house, watching TV and trying to stay out of trouble. But, we did do the obligatory grilling of steaks over the weekend. Memorial Day just wouldn't be Memorial Day unless you did that!!!! Other than that, the weather was beautiful...so good, in fact, that we broke down and turned on our central AC. We normally don't like turning it on until June!!!!

And, as usual, here are a few photos of our garden...as you can see, it's really starting to look like summer!!!!

And that was our Memorial Day for 2009.....

And on rolls Spring 2009....

Friday, June 19, 2009: ACI Reunion

This is a biannual event and was the first one that Lisa and the webmaster had been to since March 2004. A chance to catch up with the people that the Webmaster worked for and with for eight (8) years [1994-2002]. Unfortunately, this years turn out was quite small. We guess that the economy [lousy], the weather [it had been raining most of the afternoon] and the fact that the Word College Series of Baseball was happening had a real impact on whether people turned up. While most of the people who did turn up were the "higher managers", a few of the actual ex-workers did turn up and it was great to see them....

For those interested, the reunion was held in and old ACI haunt called DJ's Dugout. It used to be the Scorecard years ago (back in the good old days). Anyway, that was the ACI reunion for 2009....

Monday, June 22, 2009: End of Spring

Well, that enough about travel. For all you weather fans out there, without further ado, here are the season's weather statistics

This will be the last posting of the season 2009. Spring is officially over,  and summer is with us. Mind you, not that the weather has changed to much in the last few days. And, now for some season statistics:

So, that's pretty much been our Spring 2009. Alas  therefore, this will probably be the last update for season 2009 (unless we remember something really fantastic that happened!!!). Hope you've all had as much fun watching this season unfold as much as we have. In case you haven't guessed, the next Spring posting will be in late March 2009...see ya'all back then. Enjoy the rest of the year. Ya'all come back, ya hear!!!!!
