Spring 2008

Spring 2008 is officially over....this sub-web is now clsed for business....

Spring 2008 is officially over. this is the archived version of our Spring 2008 sub-web......

Well, as you know, spring is here in Omaha can have many, varied weather patterns. It is not unusual to have snow, we always have lots of rain and then there's the odd tornados or three. Plus, to tell the truth, the temperatures can be up and down like a yo-yo. To put it mildly, the temperature can be very interesting.

So, in keeping with previous years, we are asking several questions for Spring 2008 in Omaha.

  • Will we get snow in spring [i.e. when will the last snow fall]??? Answer....This year, not a flake fell after the start of Spring....

  • How much rain will we have this season???? Answer......Heaps. Omaha has received some 23" of rain over the period, compared to about 17" on average. Too much water....but at least everything is green!!!

  • How many tornados will we have this season??? Answer....We had a total of five tornado warnings in Omaha. This also resulted in a total of three (3) confirmed tornadoes in Omaha proper. Luckily, we were not hit!!!!

  • What will the highest temperature be (i.e., when can we start wearing shorts again)???  Answer.....See See below.

  • What will the lowest temperature for the season be (i.e., how long will we have to keep our winter coats out)??? Answer...See below.

  • How long will the war with Iraq take????? Answer...The war continues on as usual. The body bag count increases as does the amount of money being sunk into Iraq. There is no end in sight of this quagmire!!!!

  • When do we start attacking North Korea??? Answer...Not yet. But, there is till nine months left of the Bush administration, so anything can still happen....

All these questions, and many others, will be answered before the end of spring.

So, what's on the agenda for the Burton's in spring 2008....

Start of Spring...yippee....we've survived winter.

And so begins Spring 2008....

Friday, March 21, 2008: Good Friday

Both Lisa and the webmaster were in Omaha. hey, it only happens once a couple of years. Unfortunately, Lisa had to work, and the webmaster was still recovering from major medical problems. So, the basic news is, we did nothing over the entire weekend. Unlike the folks down in Australia, we [USA] do not get any time off for Easter, so it was essentially business as usual.

And on rolls Spring 2008...

Monday, April 7, thru Friday, April 11, 2008: Lisa Spring Break

Ah yes, the time of year all teachers here in the US enjoy. Spring break and a  week away from all the school kids. A week of rest, relaxation and recuperation.

This year, the webmaster was in Omaha, so Lisa and he were able to spend the week together. About the only "major" things done this week were getting haircuts and finally getting the skylight in the spare bathroom replaced. It has been leaking for about the last year, but we've had a great del of difficulty in getting contractors to come over an d give s quotes to get the work done. But, with the slow down in the housing market, all of a sudden home contractors are falling over themselves to do jobs like this. Anyway, here's two photos of the replacement skylight and the damage done to the ceiling.....

Mind you, at some point during the summer, we need to get the damage to the ceiling repaired. But, that's a job for later on in the season.

The rest of Lisa's Spring Break was spent reading, watching TV and just generally relaxing around the house. Mind you, she has more than earnt the week off....

And on rolls Spring 2008...

Still not quite sure why we included this one is here. This is the day that every tax payer hates: Tax Day. All tax payers must have their tax returns either into the IRS or the envelopment must be stamped by today. The even crazier thing is that 33 million Americans will spend today racing about to either get filings complete, or file for extensions. All post office's are open until midnight to accommodate these idiots. The really dumb thing is: this date DOES NOT CHANGE!!!!. We all know it's coming, year after year. How much brain power does it take to be a little bit organized (especially with the IRS...the crowd that brought down Al Capone). Screw this midnight crap!!!!

Will we be filing on time???? Hell yea, of course we did. But, this year we ended up owing the IRS money. I still have no clue how PAYE tax payers can end up owing the IRS money...man, they're the ones who do the calculations as to how much you owe. But, that's life, and there's not too much you can do about it!!!

Friday, April 18, thru Monday, April 21, 2008: New York City

This trip was originally planned so that Lisa and her mother, Lynne, could go to New York City and see a local girl from Sterling play at Carnegie Hall. Given the dates, it was then decided that Lisa and Lynne would make a girls weekend out of it because the weekend also happened to coincide with Lynne's birthday.

And so, dutifully, Lisa and Lynne headed for their respective airports (Lisa, Omaha Eppley, Lynne Chicago O'Hare) for the fun flight to New York, leaving both Slim and the webmaster alone in their respective houses...But, heck, we can handle it!!!!

After what has been described by both Lisa and Lynne as a most uneventful flight, the two travelers arrived in New York about 9:30pm EDT. Time to then head to the hotel (Le Parker Meridien at 118 West 57thSt)....

On Friday, it was time for the ladies to head out and do some sight seeing and, of course, some shopping on 5th Ave...

But, of course, no trip with Lynne would be complete without her running into someone she knows (it doesn't matter where or when, she ALWAYS manages to find someone she knows). This trip, however, was totally different. This time, it was Lisa who ran into someone she knew.  What this made it even more ironic, was that the person Lisa ran into was Peg Cornils, the person who was actually going to be playing at Carnegie Hall on Sunday . And, of all the places she saw her was at  Macys in New York...mind you, it's only one of the largest stores on the face of the planet, and only receives some 200K visitors per day. But, of course, Lisa had to run into someone!!!!

After a busy day of shopping, etc, it was time for supper [which consisted of a banana and water] ]and the first show of the trip....namely, "Spring Awakening" at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Broadway...

After  the show, it was finally time to go and get something to eat...at Rosie O'Grady' s on 7th Ave and 52nd Street.

On Saturday, it was time again for more shopping and sight seeing. The start of the day was Central Park, the only green section in New York City...

However, for Lynne and Lisa's trip to New York, there was an added bonus. The Pope was in town (yes, the real Pope, all the way from Rome!!!!). So, given that it was a once in a life time opportunity, Lisa and Lynne decided to join the rest of New York in lining the streets....

The pictures of the Popewurst signs and Heilburg were taken in the German village. These are the two remaining German stores left in the village, at least according  to a conversations with a woman on the steps of St. Josephs.

Before heading back to the Hotel, the travelers stopped at a German Church, St Joseph's. It was in the Yorkville neighborhood on E. 87th Street. This is the church the Pope gave an ecumenical service on Friday evening April 18. This was the first German Catholic church in New York founded in 1873 for Catholic, Jewish and Protestant Germans. The photos were taken before confession and Mass....

After lining up and seeing the Pope [see the photo evidence above], it was time for the intrepid adventurers to retire to the Hotel, get ready for dinner [at the Rainbow Room at The Rockefeller Centre) and then go to the second show of the trip. This time, the show was August: Osage County at the Imperial Theatre, again on Broadway

And so ended Saturday.

On Sunday, it was of course time for Church....this time at St. Patrick's Cathedral. The Bishop was not there as he was with the Pope at Ground Zero and later at Yankee Stadium. However, the mass at St. Patrick's was a special mass for the New York City Firefighters.

After mass, it was off to lunch at the Tavern on the Green and more shopping....

The skyline pictures above are from the restaurant in Rockefeller Center

After wandering around Manhattan all day Sunday [and watching the Pope's service telecast from Yankee Stadium], it was finally time for the event Lisa and Lynne had come to New York in the first place.....to see a local Sterling girl perform at Carnegie Hall. Dinner was at the hotel and then it was off to Carnegie Hall. Personally, the webmaster has never been to Carnegie Hall, let alone anyone good enough to be invited to play there. So, it was very special for Lisa and Lynne to go and see someone they knew play there....

As for the concert itself, comments regarding the performance are left to the people who actually went and viewed it. But, both Lisa and Lynne were glad they went to support someone they knew play at Carnegie Hall.

After the concert, it was time to head back to the hotel for dessert and drinks and to prepare for the trip back to Omaha [Lisa] and Sterling [Lynne]. From what both Lisa and Lynne have said, the weekend was most enjoyable and definitely worth the trip.

The last photo of the weekend was taken by Lisa in the Hotel room and sort of summed up one of the big parts of the weekend......

And that was the New York trip for Spring 2008. And on rolls Spring 2008.....

Thursday, May 1, 2008: General

It's that time of year again....time to start having to cut the lawn again. We had put it off for as long as possible. Plus, the webmaster wanted to actually get some photos of the Flowering Apple tree in our back yard. This tree flowers for about a week a year, and if you blink, you miss it (Nebraska's famous winds normally blow them away within a day or so]. This was the first time in five years that the webmaster had been home to see the tree actually flowering, so he was determined to capture documentary proof of the tree flowering....

So, here are the first signs of spring-summer 2008 in Omaha Nebraska....

As usual, we also have a brief video of the starting signs of spring....(double click on the following link)...

Spring Video

As you can all see, things are finally starting to turn green again!!! And it was a good thing that we cut the grass for the first time when we did....that night, it absolutely bucketed down with rain!!!!! Also, here a couple of photos of the webmasters new "spring 2008 fashion" statement....

Finally, on the medical front, the webmaster suffered from a doctor induced relapse of his throat problems in the last week. The doctors ordered the webmaster off his meds for a week so they could run some GI PH Tests to help determine what was causing all the acid reflux. Unfortunately, as soon as the webmaster stopped taking the meds, he had an almost instantaneous medical relapse. This was even after we had warned the doctors that this would happen before he went off the meds. Idiots!!!! Anyway, after a brief stint in hospital [2 days], the webmaster was back on the meds and everything is back to being fine and dandy. Stupid medical profession!!!!!

And on rolls Spring 2008....

The official start to the BBQ and driving seasons. Where will be and what will we be doing???

The answer to that one is pretty easy....the weather was not particularly good, so Lisa and the webmaster decided to stay home over the long weekend. This decision was made doubly easier by the fact that the webmaster was not feeling particularly good over the weekend. So, we just stayed at home and watched TV and DVD's. It may not sound like much, but we enjoyed it anyway.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 Omaha

On quiet evening, while Lisa and the Webmaster were out in the backyard, we saw something very unusual over Omaha.....a hot air balloon. While this may be a common sight over other areas of the world, but its definitely an unusual sight over Omaha....

Like we said, something of an oddity for Omaha...

Friday, June 20, 2008 End of Spring

This is the end of Spring 2008. As is our practice, this is what the house looks like at the end of Spring....
