Spring 2004 is long gone, and this is the archive version of our Spring 2004 Activities. Check out our activities for the Spring 2004 season that was......
So, without further ado: here's what we got up to in Spring 2004.
Well, as you know, spring time here in Omaha can have many, varied weather patterns. It is not unusual to have snow, we always have lots of rain, then there's the odd tornado or three. Plus, to tell the truth, the temperatures can be up and down like a yo-yo. To put it mildly, the weather here can be very "interesting".
So, in keeping with previous years, we are asking several questions for Spring 2004 in Omaha, Nebraska:
All these questions, and many others, will be answered before the end of spring.
So, what's on the agenda for the Burton's in spring 2004....By the way, we're handling photos differently this year. Instead of loading them onto one single page, we'll be using hyperlinks to individual new pages. This is to improve site performance by reducing the load time soft reach page. A full seasons worth of photos takes forever to load. Hopefully, this will help people with slower connections!!!!
March 22, 2004
Start of Spring...yippee....we've survived winter.
And so, we've survived yet another winter. It's hard to believe that just a week ago we were still digging ourselves out from 7-8" of the white stuff. Now, its 65°F (18°C), sunny and glorious. In fact, the weather is now so good that we've had to cut the grass for the first time this season!!!!! Mind you, we did wait until April 2, rather than earlier. The webmaster just had a deep physiological problem with cutting the lawn in March....it's just something you don't do!!!! But, on April 2, we had to bow to the inevitable and cut the grass. So, here are some photos actually proving that spring is really with us....
Not only was this week the start of Spring, but we also managed to get our corporate web site up and running. You can check it out at www.stephisa.com.
And so, April 2004 has now started....in with sunshine, out with snow and freezing temperatures. But, with Omaha, you can never really be sure what the weather is going to do!!!
April 9, 2004
The webmaster and Lisa spent a very quiet Easter at home in Omaha. About the only exciting thing we did over the weekend was to go and see "The Passion of Christ"....while it was a very violent film, both of us were glad that we went and saw it.
And so, that was our Easter 2004....on with Spring!!!!
April 15, 2004
Still not quite sure why we included this one is here. This is the day that every tax payer hates: Tax Day. All tax payers must have their tax returns either into the IRS or the envelopment must be stamped by today. The even crazier thing is that 33 million Americans will spend today racing about to either get filings complete, or file for extensions. All post office's are open until midnight to accommodate these idiots. The really dumb thing is: this date DOES NOT CHANGE!!!!. We all know it's coming, year after year. How much brain power does it take to be a little bit organized (especially with the IRS...the crowd that brought down Al Capone). Screw this midnight crap!!!!
Anyway, Lisa and the webmaster had our returns successfully files on time. However, this year, we actually had to pay money to Uncle Sam. I guess that it had to happen sometime!!! But, yikes did it hurt.......
April 26 - 27, 2004:Job Hunting and Traveling
With us being our company, the webmaster always seem to be in search of a new contract [read: job] to keep the roof over our collective heads. So, with that in mind, the webmaster set out on Monday, April 26 2004, for a job interview in Detroit, Michigan. At the same time, however, another deal was being hatched in Valparaiso, Indiana. After the interview in Detroit on Tuesday morning [5/27], with no firm job offer in hand, the webmaster contacted the folks in Valparaiso to see what their deal was.....mind you, the call was made from the back seat of a taxi enroute back to Detroit's airport. This call resulted in an offer that was too good to refuse.....a six month "contract to hire deal" at $85/hour. In today's IT market, you basically take what you can get, when you can get it. Especially at the quoted rate!!!!
Here are maps relating to jobs in both Detroit and Valparaiso.....
And so, the webmaster is off to Valparaiso, Indiana.....life back on the road......the start date is Tuesday, May 5, 4004....
April 30 - May 2, 2004 Road Trip to Decorah, Iowa
Early on Friday, Lisa and the webmaster set out on a road trip to Decorah, Iowa. No, we didn't just wake up one morning and decide to take a seven hour car trip....there was some method to the madness. This time, the trip purpose was for Lisa's father's 70th birthday on Friday, and then a wedding on the Saturday. So, there was a real reason for the trip.
And so, at 10am on Friday, the intrepid adventurers set out from Omaha, enroute to Decorah. Rather than take the usual "boring" route via the interstates, we decided to take the back route through Iowa. The following maps are the route we took and the map of Decorah, Iowa....as usual, double click to see the full sized version.
After a seven and a half hour drive, we finally made it into Decorah at around 5:30pm. Lisa's folks made it into town about an hour later. We all then went out for dinner for Slim's 70th birthday. This was the same restaurant we went to last time we were in Decorah with the webmasters folks back in July 2000....namely the Hotel Winneshiek. Unfortunately, this time, the food was atrocious....Slim's steak was basically raw, and Lisa's was like rubber...it would have bounced 5' if you had of dropped. A really big disappointment. The food was so good the last time. But, I guess that's what happens when a place is bought out!!! Anyway, happy birthday to Slim. After the long drive, everyone was ready to crash at around 10:30pm on Friday night...talk about a bunch of wimps!!!!!!!!!
On the Saturday morning, the girls wondered around downtown shopping while Slim and the webmaster kept themselves busy be standing around and staying out of trouble. After lunch at Lisa's most favorite pizza joint in the world, it was time to Head to Burr Oak Iowa for the wedding. For those of you down under, here is where Burr Oak Iowa is.....and the exciting places in Burr Oaks....
As for the wedding, here are some photos. Also, there are some photos of lively downtown Decorah!!!! For those relatives down under, yes, you are now related to these folks!!!
Decorah Road Trip.....
And so, with the wedding over, it was time to leave Decorah on Sunday and head back to Omaha....and yet another seven and a half hour car trip. However, we did take a different route home....again, seeing more of picturesque Iowa...this is the route we took...
Speaking of road trips, for those wondering what the official number counts for highway oddities for this trip, see below. Remember, the rules can be found at this link....
And so, the first road trip for Spring 2004 was over. Time to get back to Omaha and the rest of season Spring 2004....
May 31, 2004
Memorial Day is traditionally a day to have a party. It's the official start of the BBQ season and, more importantly, the driving season. What did we do...nothing!!!!! A great, relaxing and peaceful long weekend!!!!
June 17, 2004 On the Road again......
As previously mentioned, the webmaster is back on the road again...this time he's in Valparaiso, Indiana. You can see it's location relative to Chicago in one of the maps above...see the Job Hunting section above....
So, what is Valparaiso like the webmaster hears you ask...well, it's a small, sleepy little College Town. When college is on, the population is about 28K...once college is out, the population is about 15K. They have a huge teaching hospital, as well as a large legal school in addition to the regular college campus. The place has also suffered big time during the recession....it's part of the classic "rust belt"...lots of old abandoned factories and steel mills that now lie idle. They are victims of incompetent management, inept unions and globalization. As a result, the whole place seems to have a "run down"...there are holes in the streets and sidewalks [where they exist at all] and the whole place looks as if it's a place that "time and god forgot" [much like Queensland in Australia....].
But, the people are very friendly and the work is interesting [remember the old Chinese proverb about living in interesting times...]. The webmaster has an apartment just around the corner from work, and there are lots of "refreshment establishments" nearby. Here is a map of where the webmaster lives and some of the places nearby [remember, double click on the map to see the full view]...
All these places are within a one mile radius of the webmaster's apartment in Valparaiso. As you can all see, there are quite a few "refreshment establishments" not too far away.
Finally, keeping with tradition [well, the webmaster's tradition anyway], here are some "party snaps" of Valparaiso, Indiana....
And yes, the "party snaps" are an ensemble of work, local area and apartment shots...just remember to double click on them to see the full size versions of the photos....and, by the way, while the apartment may not have too much furniture, it still beats the living *&^#! out of a hotel room....all the webmaster needs is a place for the laptop, a fridge [to keep the beer cold] and a bed!!!!! And, hey, they're paying for it!!!!
And so, Spring 2004 marches on...
June 22, 2004 End of Spring
This will be the last posting of the Spring season 2004.
Firstly, here are the travel statistics for the last three months. For those of you that don't remember, the webmaster spent most of summer 2002 traveling between Omaha and Indianapolis on United Airlines. And, the availability sucked!!!!! So, here are the official statistics for the flights taken by the Omaha Burton's over this Spring....
This corresponds to an on time percentage of 62.5%....This is not real good. It just goes to prove that all US airlines are as crappy as each other!!!!! By the way, the initial delay on Monday June 14 was caused by an unauthorized light aircraft on the active runway at Omaha....the take off was aborted at the last minute and we then had to wait 45 minutes before we could take off again...the FAA mandates this to make sure that the brakes have cooled down.
Well, that enough about travel. For all you weather fans out there, without further ado, here are the season's weather statistics
This will be the last posting of the season 2004. Spring is officially over, and summer is with us. Mind you, not that the weather has changed to much in the last few days. And, now for some season statistics:
Here are the weather statistics for Spring 2004....
Finally, the average high and lows for Spring 2004
For those of you that are really interested in the weather, here is the daily, maximum and minimum, temperatures for Omaha over Spring 2004:
This should keep you "weather nuts" happy for a while. Remember, people from down under, all temperatures are in ºF.
So, that's pretty much been our Spring 2004. Alas therefore, this will probably be the last update for season 2004 (unless we remember something really fantastic that happened!!!). Hope you've all had as much fun watching this season unfold as much as we have. In case you haven't guessed, the next Spring posting will be in late March 2005...see ya'all back then. Enjoy the rest of the year. Yo'all come back, ya hear!!!!!
