Fall/Autumn 2007 is officially....this is the archive version of of our Fall 2007 activities.....

Fall/Autumn 2007 is officially over. This is the archived version of our Fall 2007 activities.

As with previous years, here are a few questions regarding Fall/Autumn 2007....

  1. When will the first frost of the season occur??? Answer: See below...

  2. When will we get the first snow of the season??? Answer: See Below....

  3. How much snow will we get for the season??? Answer: See below....

  4. For how much longer will we be able to wear shorts and other summer like clothes??? Answer: See below...

  5. Will Nebraska be in the College Playoff's???? Answer: Nope. They didn't even get close. They were unceremoniously bundled out of the post season bowl series....hey, we even got ourselves a new coach...

  6. Who will we be at war with????? North Korea and/or Syria or Iran???? Answer: Still only Iraq..

  7. What will be the body bag count from Iraq???? Answer: 4,000 and rising..

  8. Will there be an Iraqi government in Iraq [as opposed to the US installed government]???? Answer: We shall have to wait and find out...

  9. How many hurricane's will we have this season??? How many more screw ups will Bush and his Republican lapdogs make of disaster relief??? Answer: This was a very quiet hurricane season....

But wait, more than these questions will be answered (and I have no clue as to what other questions will be answered) by the end of Fall!!!!.

Anyway, here are the Fall/Autumn activities from the Burton's of Omaha....

September 22, 2007

Yep, the official start of Fall/Autumn 2007

Yup, we've survived summer 2007. The weather from here on will be all downhill. But, until the really yucky weather arrives, we can look forward to warm days and cool nights. Almost perfect weather that helps make living in the Midwest bearable.

So how did we help forward in Fall 2007.....that one is easy....we went and watched college football at out local "restorative cordial" establishment, namely Lighthouse Bar & Grill. This time the game was Ball State at Nebraska. From what we can find from a map, Ball State is a college school some where in Indiana. Anyway, Nebraska only just walked away with a win (41-40). So much for a walk over game against an unknown school!!!!!

After the game, which started at 11:30am, it was back home for some nature shots. Lisa and the webmaster were fascinated to watch a spider spend some three hours building its web...I know what you're thinking, small things amuse small brains....yes, that's true, but it was still neat watching nature at work!!!!

And that was how we ushered in Fall 2007......

Friday, September 28, 2007: The Fonz

On Friday, September 28, at an Omaha Hearing School fundraiser, Lisa and the webmaster were treated to a step down memory lane. The guest speaker was Henry Winkler, aka the Fonz, from the 70's sit-com series "Happy Days". He turned out actually to be a pretty "cool" guy.....from a successful actor to an author of children's author. Plus, he was a fairly articulate and intelligent speaker, who was able to speak clearly about many current issues. Mind you, we're not quite sure if the conservative Nebraska audience quite agreed with some of his views on current political issues (even though Lisa and the webmaster did)......

Anyway, here is proof of us (well, Lisa) actually meeting the "Fonz"......

And, because we now have digital video capability, and, because we can, here are two [2] short videos of the evening...

Anyway, here's to a more simple time when life did not seem so quite complex or confusing....

And on rolls Fall 2007.....

Monday, October 1, 2007: Big Screen TV Purchase

We know the purchase of a TV does not normally rate a special mention as an exciting thing, but this actually was. Lisa and the webmaster finally bought the bullet and bought ourselves a 42" Flat Screen Plasma TV. Now we can really watch football in style!!!!!!

As you can see from the photos, this thing is huge!!!! Well, at least by our standards it is!!! And, Lisa deserves all the credit. She was the one who found it and got a fantastic price on it as well.

We also decided to throw in some last external house photos. The weather has been so good that the lawn is looking the healthiest it has looked in years. In October, the grass is supposed to brown and dead, not green and growing like all get go!!!!!

And, just to give you a tantalizing glimpse of fall, a short video of our neighborhood.....

Saturday, October 27, 2007: Sterling, IL 25th High School Anniversary

This was our first real road trip of the year (one of two we normally take). This one was to Sterling, Illinois, for Lisa's 25th year High School reunion. The webmaster's was last year and, for obvious reason's, we did not attend. But, for Lisa's we did!!!! It's hard to believe that we've both been out of high school for twenty five (25) years!!! Where has the time gone!!!!

Anyway, the trip started on Friday morning, with a short (????) five hour car trip to Moline, Illinois. There, we caught up with one of Lisa's  best friends, and a regular guest and mention on this web site, Nancy. After the obligatory meal at the Belgium Village Inn (which consisted of a huge Reuben Sandwich), we spent the rest of the night in Moline at Nancy's house.

Early on Saturday morning, however, it was time to head off to Sterling. After a quick lunch in Sterling, it was time to spend a very pleasant afternoon relaxing in preparation of tonight's party....well, actually, the webmaster snoozed while watching college football, while Lisa and her mother prepared Lisa's "costume" for tonight party.

The party itself started at 7pm at a local landmark restaurant called "Candle Light", which is locally famous for it's "Chicken George" meal. This is a great meal, but, because its fried, unfortunately the webmaster cannot eat it. As this was the main food offered at the function, the webmaster had to stick to cheese and crackers!!!! The actual function itself was great...Lisa got to see lots of people she hadn't seen for years. All in all, we think she enjoyed herself.

Unfortunately, the light in the function room was so bad, getting any more photos was next to impossible. So, these were the only photos we were able to get.

And so came Sunday. After church in the morning (which the webmaster got a leave pass from), it was time for a quick BBQ lunch at Ross and Kim's. Then, alas, it was time for the long, six hour car trip back to Omaha!!!.

As usual, no car trip would be complete without our list of "highway oddities"....

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

It's that time of year again.....it's time for this uniquely American annual tradition. The little monsters actually get points for dressing up as monsters and wondering from house to house to "trick or treat". ....

This tear, the webmaster was in Omaha, so he got the early "trick or treat" duty, from 5pm through to 6:30pm. Lisa came home at about 6:30pm, and then we split the duty of answering the door and handing out candy. We had about twenty five of the little monsters up until 8:30pm.

And so goes on Fall 2007.....

Tuesday, November 6, 2007: Election Day:

The annual "pick a candidate to vote for" day. As this is an "off year", there is no control of either powers up for grabs. This will be dominated by local issues...most so obscure that most people have no clue as to what they are about.....

Also, the first Tuesday in November is when the Melbourne Cup Race is held down under. Personally, we think that the outcome of the horse race has far more meaning that the annual election day this year.

And, the winner this year was.....a horse....Efficient was the horses name.

And that was election day 2007.......

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

It's the webmasters birthday....and, the webmaster was in Omaha. This was the first time the webmaster has been in Omaha for his birthday since 2003, so it was definitely something of a novelty to be able to spend his birthday at home with Lisa. So, what did we do. Well, after a meal at M's Pub down town, we went and saw the Monty Python musical "Spamalot", which was absolutely hysterical...

And that was the webmasters birthday for 2007. And, along roles Fall 2007....

Thursday, November 22, 2007, Thanksgiving:

Ahh...gobblers day. Not a good time of year to be a turkey. You definitely now that Fall is upon you with a vengeance when Turkey Day arrives. You also know that Christmas is not too far around the corner....which means that the annual shopping frenzy is about to begin!!!! Millions of people in crowded malls....what a treat!!!. This is also the busiest travel period of the year, eclipsing Christmas with some 38.3 million Americans traveling more than 50 miles over the Thanksgiving period.....including some 25 million airline passengers. Needless to say, the airports will be crowded, made even more chaotic with the new carry-on baggage requirements.

Well, just as the Thanksgiving silly season began on the Wednesday, the weather decided to turn south and became very, very nasty. We can now officially that the first snow of the season fell on the day before Thanksgiving, i.e. Wednesday, November 21....While the amount of snow that fell was actually quite small, it cam as a hell of a shock to the system. The previous day was 70F and sunny, while the next day was, well, you can see what the next day was like...

And so dawned Thanksgiving Day. The weather had not improved much at all overnight. In fact, about the only that happened was that the snow had turned to ice on any concrete surface, which made being outside extremely dangerous....

The rest of the morning and afternoon was spent by Lisa and the webmaster cleaning the house and cooking in preparation of the arrival of Lisa's parents for the annual Thanksgiving feast....

At about 3:00pm, Lynne and Slim arrived, so soon after, it was time for the annual Thanksgiving feast...

After supper, it was time to carve up the rest of the turkey and bag it all to be frozen....it will provide lunches for the webmaster for about the next two months. Then, after watching some football, it was time for cards...again is tradition, euchre. As with last year, the boys won 2-1!!!!! But, while the boys may win at Thanksgiving, we always loose the return game at Christmas. But, we shall see!!!

The Friday was spent shopping, along with the rest of Omaha. We started with lunch at  the Cheesecake Factory before  hitting the mall. As usual, Slim and the webmaster did get to watch the Nebraska, Colorado game....which Nebraska comprehensively lost 65-51. After the mall, we headed downtown to see what was going on down there. As usual, not too much. That's the problem with Omaha (and actually, not just Omaha), the downtown areas are basically ghost towns as all the stores and places of interest have all fled out to suburbia. So, about the only that can be said about downtown was that it was bleak and freezing, too cold be out and walking the streets!!!

After a quick meal, it was time to head out to another mall. Unfortunately, this was another outside mall. As the sun had completely gone down, it was even colder than when we were downtown!!! But, that's shopping in Nebraska at this time of year.

Anyway, after the second mall it was time to head home. It had been a long day being outside, and everyone was ready to be inside and warm.

And so came Saturday. Unfortunately, Slim and Lynne decided to head back to Sterling early to avoid some forecasted bad weather as well as the traffic on Sunday (when the entire country hits the road to be back at home in time for work on Monday morning).

And that was Thanksgiving 2007!!!

Thursday, November 29, 2007, Farewell:

At 6:30pm, we assembled at Reds Lounge to say farewell to someone we have know since we came to Omaha. Saeed Bidhendi worked for ACI until about 1999, before he moved across to HP/Tandem. He and his family are leaving Omaha and moving to New York [Long Island actually]. While he will still be working for HP, so we will still be keeping touch with him, it will be unlikely that we will see him here in Omaha again any time soon.

So, of course, before we left, we had to go out for a few restorative cordials. We could hardly let him escape without a final farewell!!

We wish Saeed and his family all the best in New York....keep in touch!!!

Thursday, December 6, 2007, Snow:

On Thursday, December 6, we received our first real snow of the 2007. Our local neighborhood received 3.5" of the white stuff, and even more was forecast over the next couple of days. While the amount of the white stuff was not extreme, it was the first real measurable snow fall for the season. And, it required the webmaster to actually have to go out and shovel the stuff. Yuck!!!

We're sure that this will not be the last snow we will see over the season.

And on rolls the Fall 2007 season...

Sunday, December 16, 2007, Snow:

Just when everyone thought we'd had enough snow for December, Omaha again went and threw a curve ball. This time, another 3-5" of the white stuff. Hey, enough already. The webmaster has had enough of removing snow. It's time for reasonably "pleasant" weather...i.e.. NO SNOW. Mind you, things could be worse: we could be in the same situation as the folks in Oklahoma and/or Missouri, where you have 750,000 folks without power because of ice. Thank god for underground power supplies!!!!!

Anyway, here's what 10"+ of the white stuff looks like.....

Hey, we may actually get a white Christmas this year....who knows!!!!!..

But, as usual, on rolls Fall 2007.....

December 2007: Christmas Parties

Well, with the passing of Thanksgiving, it's officially the start of the annual silly season. Basically, you can forget about getting anything done work wise. So, it's time to party....

And how many parties will we get to this year.......actually, this year, not too many. For some reason, neither Lisa nor the webmaster were able to summon a "Christmas" spirit. Min you, no one else we knew felt like it either. Anyway, as a result, we had a very quiet Christmas party season, with only one party being attended. I guess its called old, but that's what happened.....

And with the end of the Christmas party season, it was time to bid farewell to Fall 2007.....

December 21, 2006: End of Fall/Autumn:

We will have officially survived Fall/Autumn 2007. And on marches winter 2007!!!!

Before we do the weather stuff for Fall/Autumn 2007, here are our travel statistics for the season that just was.....the answer to this one this year is easy....none. No air travel was needed this season....

While these numbers were a dammed sight better than last year, they are still not what you would classify as stellar....

And, now, without further ado, here are the season statistics for Fall/Autumn 2007.

Category Date High Temperature (F) Low Temperature (F)
Coldest Day December 16, 2007 19F 5F
Warmest Day September 23, 2007 87F 71F

The average high and lows for Fall/Autumn 2006:

Category Temperature (F)
Average High Temperature 57F
Average Low Temperature 37F

Finally, for those of you that are really interested in the weather, here is the daily, maximum and minimum, temperatures for Omaha over Fall/Autumn 2007.

This should keep you "weather nuts" happy for a while. Remember, people from down under, all temperatures are in F.

So, that's pretty much our Fall/Autumn 2007. Alas  therefore, this will probably be the last update for season 2007. (unless we remember something really fantastic that happened!!!).  Yo'all come back, ya hear!!!!!
