Fall 2005

Fall/Autumn 2005 is offically over.....this is the archive version of our Fall 2005 sub-web....

This is the archive version of our Fall 2005 sub-web....check out our activities for the season that was...

As with previous years, here are a few questions regarding Fall/Autumn 2005....

  1. When will the first frost of the season occur??? Answer: See the weather details at the bottom of this sub-web...

  2. When will we get the first snow of the season??? Answer: The first white stuff appeared on November 30.

  3. How much snow will we get for the season??? Answer: As of December 21, 2005, a total of some 11.4" of the white stuff had fallen...

  4. For how much longer will we be able to wear shorts and other summer like clothes??? Answer: See the weather details at the bottom of this sub-web...

  5. Will Nebraska be in the College Playoff's???? Answer: Actually, surprisingly, yes. Nebraska made it into the Alamo Bowl, which will be played on December 28 against Michigan

  6. Who will we be at war with????? North Korea and/or Syria or Iran???? Answer: Strangely enough, no-one else has been invaded by the US or the other coalition of the bribed and coerced. But, there is still lots of time for this to change...

  7. What will be the body bag count from Iraq???? Answer: As of December 21, some 2,175 US personnel have died in Iraq. And, there seems to be no end in site.

  8. Will there be an Iraqi government in Iraq [as opposed to the US installed government]???? Answer: The government the US got in Iraq is not exactly one they wanted. The Shiite government elected in December is more closely aligned to Iran than any democracy. Also, they are extremely religious in nature, which does not bode well for women or other basic human rights. And, then insurgency continues.

  9. How many hurricane's will we have this season??? How many more screw ups will Bush and his Republican lapdogs make of disaster relief??? Answer: Fortunately, while there were approx six more hurricanes, none were nearly a dangerous or as deadly as either Katrina or Rita.

But wait, more than these questions will be answered (and I have no clue as to what other questions will be answered) by the end of Fall!!!!.

Anyway, here are the Fall/Autumn activities from the Burton's of Omaha....

September 22, 2005

Yep, we will have officially survived Summer 2005......however, certain parts of the USA did not. Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The slowness in the response of the Federal Government, most notably FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency], to the plight of the folks in New Orleans was compared to it's response to other hurricanes in other parts of the country. Katrina hit New Orleans [poor and black], and it took FEMA two weeks to respond. Rita hit Texas [white and rich]....FEMA were there before the storm hit. It certainly makes you wonder whether there was racism in play. Actually, the webmaster does not think so...it's just another example of the whole attitude of this republican president and congress...benign neglect for anyone who is not white and wealthy. They just don't care!!!!

Anyway, Fall 2005 has begun. With eight (8) more weeks to go of the hurricane season, it will be interesting to see how much more of a screw up the Bush administration can make of disaster relief. Refer to item 9 above.......

Anyway, onwards to Fall 2005, for the start of freezing temperatures, falling leaves, snow and, of course, more hurricanes in Florida...not to mention exploding energy prices due, entirely, to the incompetence of Bush and his lapdogs.

On goes Fall 2005....

September 26, 2005: Last House Building Work for 2005

It was fast approaching that any external house construction be completed as soon as possible. Soon, the snow and the cold will make any such work nigh on impossible. So, with that in mind, we scheduled our last construction work for the year. This time, it was to repair a front window and back deck door from the ravages of dry rot. The weather in Nebraska is such that, any moisture collecting in the eves against the house, will always result in dry rot from expansion and contraction. And, that is what exactly what happened to us...and, man was it bad. When the crew arrived to remove the window and door frames, they didn't need to use crow bars....the frames just disintegrated in their hands!!!!! Needless to say, we were extremely happy when the work was complete!!!!

We also threw in a photo of the new blind we put up on one our main windows. This is included specifically for the webmasters parents so they can see what it actually looks like....it was discussed at length while they were here earlier in the year.

On marches Fall 2005...

September 28, 2005: Cool Storm

Shortly after we had completed the work on our doors and windows above, a rather cool system moved through the Omaha area. While it wasn't tornadic in nature, it was still enough to generate "severe weather alerts". So, like all good mid-westerners, we went outside and took photos....

Pretty cool huh!!!!......

October 28 thru October 30, 2005: Road Trip to Moline, IL

On the morning of Friday October 28, Lisa and the webmaster set out on their first road trip for 2005. Lisa had just completed parent conferences, so she had the day off. The webmaster just decided to take a vacation day...the first since April of this year. Also, we wanted to see what Lisa's new Lexus is made of and how it performed on the open interstate.

And so, the intrepid adventurers set out for Moline, IL, where they were to stay with Lisa's good friend Nancy. We were also to catch up with an old college friend of Lisa, someone she hasn't seen for over twelve [12] years. Finally, we also hoped to see JJ, who was the best man at our wedding.

For those of you interested, below is a map of our road trip. As usual, double click to see the full sized map:

So, here is how we spent our weekend in Moline, IL:

bullet

On Friday afternoon, we stopped in at The Blackhawk Center, where Lisa taught for seven (7) years before we moved to Omaha

bullet

Next, we went to Leisure Time to meet up with Nancy

bullet

Then, it was off to the Belgium Village Inn to meet with Lisa's old college friend, Chrissie, and her "significant other" Bill

bullet

While we were at the BVI, Lisa's brother Ross drove down from Sterling, IL to have a few "restorative cordials" with us.

bullet

On Saturday, we drove back across the Mississippi River into Iowa to have lunch with Lisa's parents at Biaggi's in Davenport.

bullet

After lunch, it was time for the obligatory "shopping" for the next few hours

bullet

Once shopping was complete, it was back across the Mississippi River to Moline for Pizza at Nancy's

bullet

Alas, at noon on Sunday, it was time to head back to Omaha , Nebraska....back to the real world....

Here are some of the few photos we took over the weekend (mainly of Nancy's new deck and the color changing of the leaves in Fall)...

As usual with our road trips, here are our final "highway oddities" traffic count for this road trip. Refer to the Highway Oddities sub-web for our definitions of "highway oddities"....

Enroute back to Omaha, NE 7 22 3 3 3 16 0 23 0 6 0 3 1 0 16

And so, after crossing six state lines in three days (NEIAILIAILNE), the Burton's made it back to Omaha, NE. As the saying goes, and on runs Fall-Autumn.....

Monday, October 31, 2005

's that time of year again.....it's time for this uniquely American annual tradition. The little monsters actually get points for dressing up as monsters and wondering from house to house to "trick or treat". ....

And the question as to what we did.....nothing!!! Lisa had a late meeting, so the webmaster got to stay at home and hand out candy to the trick or treaters. Later, when went up to our local bar and watched Monday Night Football....

Tuesday, November 1, 2005: Election Day:

The annual "pick a candidate to vote for" day. This year is a non-election year. The only issues to vote on are local ones, which most people normally have no clue what they are all about. No seats from congress are up for grabs, and it's definitely not a presidential election year!!!!

Also, the first Tuesday in November is when the Melbourne Cup Race is held down under. Personally, we think that the outcome of the horse race has far more meaning that the annual election day this year.

And, the winner this year was.....a horse....Makybe Diva's....

But, we did also get some "interesting" photos of the changing of leaves from around our house. What makes this so interesting is that, up until recently, we haven't had enough trees to even see the changing of the colors. But, that may be changing.

And so, on rolls Fall 2005....

Monday, November  7, 2005

It's the webmasters birthday....where will be and what will we do!!!!.....the answer to this one is pretty easy. The webmaster was in Valparaiso [the armpit of the universe] and did absolutely nothing. This will be the last time the webmaster spends his birthday in this hell hole.....

November  12, 2005: Almanac Entry Random Musings

As promised in previous postings, the webmaster is using his "time" in Valparaiso to publish some of the older photos Lisa and I have. This is to make sure that the earlier "non-digital" photos are not lost....secondly, some of them are good for giggle value......

This time, the time is July 1995. The venue is during and just after our wedding. Who took the photos......who knows!!!!!

The last photo is the ultimate embarrassment to children......this one is of the webmasters nieces and nephews in 1995. I'm sure they will kill me when we see them in July of next year....but, what the hell!!!!!

Well, this was going to be the last photo, but the webmaster got bored. So, here are some more "golden oldies"......this time from December 1994. They are of the first Christmas the webmaster spent in the US [i.e., snow, cold, etc]. Also, note what was done to a hotel room in the complex the webmaster was staying at.....it's amazing where a mainframe system can be installed....

This last sequence of photos is from when the webmaster was evacuating his apartment in Cupertino, California. The very last photo is of the webmaster after having survived a twenty six [26] hour flight back from Bangkok, Thailand.....

Enjoy....

Saturday, November 19, 2005: Blast from the past....

On Saturday November 19, we were very lucky to catch up with two old friends who were in Omaha for the first time in years. Adel we hadn't seen since 2001 while Damian we hadn't seen since early 2003. So, we all went down to a local watering hole [The Fox and Hound English Bar and Grill] for a couple of restorative cordials and some time to reminisce about what's been going on over the last two years. And yes, one of our "other" local Omaha friends turned up as well....we all know each other from our days in ASTech at ACI.....none of us work for ACI any longer....

The next event will be Thanksgiving.....

November 24, 2005, Thanksgiving:

Ahh...gobblers day. Not a good time of year to be a turkey. You definitely now that Fall is upon you with a vengeance when Turkey Day arrives. You also know that Christmas is not too far around the corner....which means that the annual shopping frenzy is about to begin!!!! Millions of people in crowded malls....what a treat!!!.

This year, in keeping with recent Omaha tradition, Lisa's folks (Slim and Lynne) made the five hour trip from Sterling, Illinois, to Omaha Nebraska for the annual Thanksgiving turkey "pig out". So, of course, for a couple of days leading up to Thanksgiving, there was lots of frantic activity at the Omaha Burton's regal estate...grocery shopping, cooking and getting the house ready for human habitation, etc. However, this year we did not have to actually do the house cleaning. The cleaning lady we use every two weeks cleaned the entire house, top to bottom, on the Wednesday just prior to Thanksgiving. So, instead of spending the night before busy cleaning, Lisa and the webmaster were able to sit back, relax, and watch the Star Wars Episode III DVD....

And on rolled Thanksgiving day. In typical Omaha fashion, the temperature plummeted from a very pleasant 65F [18C] on Wednesday to a more typical 22F [-6C] for Thanksgiving. As usual, here are some photos of our regal estate before the festivities began...

Around 3pm, Lisa's folks arrived and it was time for the actual feast to commence....after of course we watched the obligatory Thanksgiving Day football matches.... On the menu was:

bullet

3-in-1 Italian Dip (Artichoke, Sun-dried Tomatoes and Roasted Red Peppers)

bullet

Italian Vegetable Bake

bullet

Crust Topped Broccoli Cheese Bake

bullet

Cranberry Sauce

bullet

Bread

bullet

Wine

bullet

and of course, Turkey....

Having successfully navigated and survived the traditional Thanksgiving food feast, it was time to clean  up and watch the second of the Thanksgiving Day football games (much to Lynne's chagrin). But, in a conciliatory move, we did watch the "Christmas with the Kranks" DVD.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, it was time for shopping....oh great. However, Slim and the webmaster did manage to get out of the first four hours of shopping by doing the years last yard work as well as other odd jobs around the house. However, at 3pm, there was no further escape....it was time for all of to go shopping...but, at least we did get to keep up with the progress of the Nebraska College Football game while we "shopped"...Nebraska beat Colorado 30-3....

On Saturday morning, it was time for Lisa's folks to return to Sterling, Illinois. They wanted to leave on the Saturday to avoid the predictable traffic snarls which is normally associated with the Sunday after Thanksgiving.....and so ended Thanksgiving 2005...onwards rolls Fall 2005...

Wednesday, November 30, 2005: Snow

On Wednesday November 30, the inevitable occurred....Fall snow. This time we received about 3" of the white stuff, along with the normal massive drop in temperature. Luckily, though, it wasn't enough to shut down the city. It just made things messy and cold....

Ah, the sign of things to come....

Thursday, December 8, 2005: Wedding

Over the weekend, Stephen and Lisa were pleased to discover that Stephen's eldest sister, Anne, had gone and got herself married. To both, we say congratulations, and we wish them all the best . To Daryl we say, welcome to the family...it's too late to back out now. But, he is about to learn the real truth about the family....the lunatics really are in charge of the asylum.....

These photos were received and posted with permission from Anne and Daryl. Congratulations guys!!!!!!!

To Anne and Daryl....congratulations.....

December 2005: Christmas Parties

Well, with the passing of Thanksgiving, it's officially the start of the annual silly season. Basically, you can forget about getting anything done work wise. So, it's time to party....

Yes, we did go to quite a few parties. Unfortunately, the only one we actually remembered to take photos of was the party up at the Lighthouse Barr and Grill on December 18. So, here are the photos from then.....

And with the Christmas Party on December 18, the Fall/Autumn Season for 2005 came to a close. Very soon ot will be the middle of deepest, darkest winter, with the associated howling wind, ice and snow which won't end for another four months. Oh what fun....

December 22, 2005: End of Fall/Autumn:

We will have officially survived Fall/Autumn 2005. And on marches winter 2006!!!!
