Fall 2004

Autumn/Fall 2004 Season is officially over...this is the archived version of our Fall 2004 Activities....

Fall/Autumn 2004 is long since past. This is the archived version of our activities. Check them out!!!! Otherwise, check out our activities for Winter 2005.....

As with previous years, here are a few questions regarding Fall/Autumn 2004....

  1. When will the first frost of the season occur??? Answer: Sometime in early October.......

  2. When will we get the first snow of the season??? Answer: The first snow fell over the Thanksgiving Weekend, with about 2-3" of the white stuff. However, the webmaster avoided it by being in hospital. As for Valparaiso, the first snow fell on December 13, with about a 1-2" dusting of the white stuff!!!!!

  3. How much snow will we get for the season??? Answer: As of December 22, 2004....Approximately 4" of the white stuff had fallen for the season....

  4. For how much longer will we be able to wear shorts and other summer like clothes??? Answer: The last official time was early October. Don't remember what the date was exactly.....

  5. Will Nebraska be in the College Playoff's???? Answer: Nebraska was eliminated on 11/26 by Colorado [actually, thrashed is a better description]. No bowl game for the Huskers this year!!!!!

  6. Who will we be at war with????? North Korea and/or Syria or Iran???? Answer: No one so far. But, take your pick as to who the next one will be. The odds are either Syria or Iran.....

  7. What will be the body bag count from Iraq???? Answer: so far, over 1,300 US troops have lost their lives because of George Bush. Interestingly, not a single child of any Federal republican politician even serves in any arm of the US military. I guess bravery with other people's kids makes you so incredibly brave....

  8. Will there be an Iraqi government in Iraq [as opposed to the US installed government]???? Answer: The US nominated flunkies are having their "election" some time in January. Now, who do you think will win????

But wait, more than these questions will be answered (and I have no clue as to what other questions will be answered) by the end of Fall!!!!.

Anyway, here are the Fall/Autumn activities from the Burton's of Omaha....

October 4, 2004

Yep, it's that time of year again. We've officially survived Summer 2004...now it's time for Fall-Autumn, where the daily temperature begins its inevitable decline. But, we should at least be some time away from the first snow of the year [we hope].

So, what is the purpose of this posting we hear you ask. Well, to be truthful, none!!!. The webmaster was home for a long weekend from Valparaiso, cut the lawn for what should be one of the last times for this year, and put up some of our Halloween decorations. Finally, as the weather was just about perfect, we thought we'd add some final photos of the house for 2004. So here they are.....

The other reason for the long weekend was that both Lisa and the Webmaster had dentist appointments [yuck!!!!] and the webmaster had to go shopping to replace basically all of his work clothes. They were over three years old and were starting to essentially fall apart. So, it was time to get rid of them. Besides, the webmaster will use any old excuse to spend extra time with Lisa.....

And, so onto the real activities for Fall-Autumn 2004....

October 22 - October 24, 2004: Chicago, Illinois:

On Friday, October 22, a very dear family friend, namely Marged Goode, flew into Chicago. So, using any old excuse to get out of Valparaiso, the webmaster headed up to Chicago for the weekend. Unfortunately, Lisa could not make it to Chicago this weekend. Too many school reports to be graded and ISP's to be written. Lisa's parents, however, were able to join us on for the weekend on Saturday morning.

Having said that, Marged and the webmaster assembled in the bar at the Swissotel on East Wacker Drive [no joke, that's the real name of the street!!!!]. After a very pleasant evening at a local eatery, and a few glasses of restorative red, it was time to retire so we could meet up with Slim and Lynne in the morning....

And, on Saturday, boy was it raining. Pouring is actually a closer, more apt, description. After making a quick dash down Michigan Ave to buy some camera related equipment, Marged and the webmaster met up with Slim and Lynne for a quick bite to eat for lunch. Then, it was time to see one of the early Halloween parades....unfortunately, because of the rain, the event was very much reduced and the participants resembled  drowned rats rather than parade members.....

Because of the rain, it had been decided to visit one of Chicago's many "cultural" attractions, this time in the form of the Art Institute of Chicago. With the webmaster providing directions, which is really scary considering this was only the second time to Chicago, we made it to the Art Institute in pretty good time. Mind you, we of course had to go via The Millennium Park....

And so, on to the Art Institute of Chicago....

After several hours at the Art Institute, it was time to return to the hotel and change for dinner. As with when the webmasters folks were in Chicago, we went to Hugo Frog Bar & Fish Place. However, apposed to the last time we were there, this time we were in no hurry, so we had time to really enjoy the food without being rushed!!! A most enjoyable evening!!!

And so came Sunday. Making an early start [well, early for the webmaster anyway!!!], we headed down to Navy Pier to see if any of the river cruises. We weren't sure which month they stopped, but we were determined to see if we could get on the hour long Architecture Cruise [this is the same cruise the webmaster's folks took in July]. As it turned out, there were no problems, other than actually finding where to board the cruise boat...

In the webmasters humble opinion, this cruise was most worth while. If your are in Chicago, have the time and the weather is behaving itself [i.e., it's not snowing!!!], do your self a favor and consider doing this hour long cruise. The architecture of Chicago is well worth seeing.

And so, the weekend drew to a close. After a quick lunch at Navy Pier, it was time to return to the hotel to pick up our stuff and go our separate ways [Marged back to Australia via Los Angeles, Slim and Lynne to Sterling and the Webmaster back to Valparaiso]. A wonderful weekend was had by all...and we've all promised to get together somewhere in the US in another five years......

October 31, 2004

Ah yes, it's that time of year again.....it's time for this uniquely American annual tradition. The little monsters actually get points for dressing up as monsters and wondering from house to house to "trick or treat". ....

So, what did we do this year??? Well, things were a little bit different. Instead of being in Omaha, both the webmaster and Lisa were in sunny (????) Valparaiso, Indiana for the Halloween weekend. Lisa was supposed be "wined and dined" by CSI as part of their plan to convince the webmaster to go permanent. Well, it turns out, that all the big wigs were "unavailable" on the Friday night...which left Lisa and the webmaster up to their own devices. Neither Lisa nor the webmaster were particularly impressed with CSI's botched attempt at wooing Lisa. So, we spent a very pleasant evening at Billy Jacks, where we had great food and a few beers.

Anyway, on Saturday, we had a guided tour of the Valparaiso area, courtesy of a local realtor. Man could that guy talk!!! He gave both Lisa and the webmaster a very detailed tour of the area...according to Lisa, it almost made up for CSI's botched attempt at impressing her....

After the guided tour, it was off up to the webmasters other favorite haunts...this time Buddy & Pals. We didn't stay too long, just long enough to say hi to the other bar flies the webmaster has met over the last few months. After that, it was time to head back to the apartment for a very quite evening....enough said......

Alas, however, the weekend came to a close far too quickly. At noon on Sunday, Lisa had to return home to Omaha. While it was a short weekend, the webmaster cannot describe how good it was to see Lisa. At least, though, she was able to get back to Omaha in time for trick or treating on Halloween....the webmaster simply went back to work for the rest of the day/evening.....

And so Halloween 2004 rolled on......what's in store for the rest of the Autumn/Fall 2004 Season.......

November 2, 2004: Election Day:

The annual "pick a candidate to vote for" day. This year, it's important. It will decide the presidency of the US as well as the balance in congress.....get out and vote no to George Bush!!!

Alas, as we all now know, we have four more years of this dumb shit. How the American people could conveniently overlook Iraq, the economy, etc and vote Bush back in is beyond me. I guess it's more important that gays don't marry than it is that Iraq is a quagmire and the economy is going south....

Oh well, for better or worse, the American people have spoken. Four more years (groan.....)

Also, the first Tuesday in November is when the Melbourne Cup Race is held down under. Personally, we think that the outcome of the horse race has far more meaning that the annual election day this year.

And, the winner this year was.....a horse....

November  7, 2004

It's the webmasters birthday....unfortunately, the webmaster was in Valparaiso for a production migration on November 8. Needless to say, he did not do too much. Watched some football, and then headed off to bed so he could be at work by 11pm........

November 25, 2004

Ahh...gobblers day. Not a good time of year to be a turkey. You definitely now that Fall is upon you with a vengeance when Turkey Day arrives. You also know that Christmas is not too far around the corner....which means that the annual shopping frenzy is about to begin!!!! Millions of people in crowded malls....what a treat!!!.

And so, what did the burtons of Omaha get up to. Well, the original plan was that we were going to get the inside of the house painted, starting on the Monday before Thanksgiving [11/22], with a completion date of the Wednesday just before Thanksgiving [11/24]. Well, as per the best laid plans of mice and men, things are oft to go astray. The webmaster dutifully arrived back in Omaha the previous Wednesday [11/17] to get the house cleaned out so the painters could start. After four (4) days of reorganizing, the house was ready to receive the painters at 8am on Monday morning [11/22]. Everything was going well until early Tuesday morning, when the webmaster unexpectedly started to need to talk to god on the big white phone every 20-30 minutes. After twenty four hours of this, Lisa decided that it was time for the webmaster to visit the emergency room at the Methodist Hospital, where they promptly admitted the webmaster for the next week!!!!!

It would appear that the webmasters "healthy" lifestyle had finally caught up with him. Over the previous 24 hours, the webmaster had become so dehydrated that his kidneys decided to pack up and go home. So, they put him on a rehydration regime of an IV pumping in 300 units an hour. Talk about a lot of fluid!!!!! Anyway, they put a bypass tube in to bypass the intestines to stop the webmaster talking to god on the big white phone....now, that was fun....not!!!!! But, they did find that the problem was with ulcerous growths in the webmasters esophagus. Nasty shit!!!!!!

So, to cut a long story short, the webmaster spent the entire Thanksgiving holiday in hospital, and wasn't released until the following Tuesday [11/30]. One hell of a way to spend turkey day. Mind you, the webmaster still thinks the hospital food is just as good/bad as it was the last time he was in hospital.

While the webmaster was in hospital, Lisa's parents came to Omaha for Thanksgiving. Lisa and her dad managed to get most of the house back in order, as well as going out shopping for new curtains, carpet and linoleum. Talk about a very expensive holiday period!!!!!! But, thanks to Lisa's folks for coming to Omaha and keeping her company while the webmaster was in hospital. Also, the same amount of thanks are due to the webmasters folks in Australia, even if they did try and call the webmaster on his cell phone while he was in hospital!!!!! It really is very hard to talk with a drainage tube stuck down your nose!!!!!!

Anyway, the webmaster was released on Tuesday 11/30, just in time for the interior painting to be finished (of course). Here are some photos of the new interior....

As you can see, the house hasn't been this clean since we first moved in back in August 1997!!!!! But, this is the first of only three major changes over the next 2-3 months. The next item is to replace he carpet...then the linoleum. All this will be done in January of 2005.

And so, that was Thanksgiving 2004. After the hospital charade, the webmaster is on a strict healthy diet, with a follow up endoscope procedure scheduled for some time in early January.

On Sunday, December 5, the webmaster unfortunately had to return to Valparaiso, Indiana. But, only for two weeks...then, it's time for Christmas.....

Late November -December 2004: Christmas Parties

Well, with the passing of Thanksgiving, it's officially the start of the annual silly season. Basically, you can forget about getting anything done work wise. So, it's time to party....

We went to three "Official" Christmas Parties this year. The first was on November 18, the second was December 11, and the third was December 18. Two of the three were in Omaha, while the third was in Valparaiso, Indiana. Unfortunately, the only Christmas party we took photos of was the one in Valparaiso....which was the least enjoyable of all three. But, here are the photos anyway...

And so, that was our Christmas Party season for  2004....and on to the rest of Fall 2004.....

December 18, 2004: Sterling Illinois:

Early on Saturday, December 18, the intrepid travelers departed Omaha for Sterling to spend Christmas with Lisa's parents. Rather than flying, this time we decided to drive from Omaha to Sterling. Mind you, it was via route I80 across Iowa, which would have to be some of the most boring stretch of highway on the face of the planet.

In keeping with the past, we did keep score of odd and unusual items spotted during the trip. Here are the results for the car trip to Sterling...

Object
Description Cops Boats Cars in Ditches Tow Trucks Trains Farm Equipment School Buses Odd Things Snow Mobile Deer Bikes
Enroute to Sterling 3 21 16 2 1 12 7 7 2 4 3

Unfortunately, you'll have to go to the Winter 2005 Sub-Web to see what our score was for the return trip back to Omaha......

Anyway, the intrepid travelers finally arrived in Sterling at around 4:30pm on Saturday afternoon, after a car trip of approximately six (6) hours. It was then time for  quick trip to church (yes, the biblical version.....and yes, even the webmaster does go to church. 5:30pm mass sure as heck beats the crap out of the 8:30am Sunday morning service...). Then, supper at the Parkway, and then back to Slim and Lynne's for a few quick hands of Euchre, which Slim and Stephen lost!!!!!!

On Sunday, it was time for the Thuente Christmas bash in Sterling, Illinois.....

Please see the discussions from last year regarding Children who are basically out of control....the same comments are more than still applicable to certain members of the younger generation. But, anyway, the fun and games started at about 11:30am. After a very brief lunch (and I do mean brief), it was time for the tornado of opening gifts to hit....

And so, after the "unwrapping" of the presents was complete, it was time for some adults to retire to the living room to watch Sunday afternoon football. Needless to say, the kids were more than happy to entertain themselves with their new Christmas gifts.....

Basically, that was the Thuente Christmas bash for 2004...

And Fall 2004 marches on...

December 20-21, 2004: Moline, Illinois:

On Monday, December 20, Lisa and the webmaster departed Sterling, IL, to spend the night in Moline, Illinois, catching up with Nancy Lavin, and, hopefully, JJ. We departed Sterling about an hour late because the webmaster had to do some work for CSI....don't you hate it when you actually have to do some work for a living!!!!!

Anyway, because the distance to Moline from Sterling qualifies as a "road trip", here are the counts of what we saw during the trip to Moline [12/20] and the trip back to Moline [12/21]...

Object
Description Cops Boats Cars in Ditches Tow Trucks Trains Farm Equipment School Buses Odd Things Snow Mobile Deer Bikes
Enroute to Moline 1 0 3 1 1 0 0 0 3 0 0
Enroute to Sterling 5 0 3 2 2 0 2 0 1 0 0

Anyway, Lisa and the webmaster arrived at Nancy's in Moline around 12:30, just in time for Lunch. After a leisurely lunch at the Belgium Village, and a quick run to the mall for some last minute Christmas shopping, it was time for Lisa to get her haircut while the webmaster made some work related phone calls. After that, we headed down to Billy Brown's bar for a few cordials and games of darts with JJ [the first time he had been able to make time to see us in tow years.....]......

After catching up with JJ, we then retired back to Nancy's for some Taco Pizza. While the girls participated in various martini's, the webmaster stuck to water and an early night.

The next day, while the girls watched day time TV, the webmaster unfortunately had to spend most of the day working. Thanks god for wireless laptop connectivity!!!!

And so, after a very pleasant day relaxing, it was time to head back to Sterling, Illinois for the rest of the Christmas week. Given the date [12/21], it was also the end of Fall Autumn 2004......

December 22, 2004: End of Fall/Autumn:

We have officially survived the Fall 2004 season and this will be the last posting for the season. We now have the frigid months of January through March to look forward to. Burr!!!

This should keep you "weather nuts" happy for a while. Remember, people from down under, all temperatures are in F.

So, that's pretty much our Fall/Autumn 2004. Alas  therefore, this will probably be the last update for season 2004. (unless we remember something really fantastic that happened!!!).  Yo'all come back, ya hear!!!!!
