Fall/Autumn 2009 officially with us. Check out our activities for the season.

As with previous years, here are a few questions regarding Fall/Autumn 2009....

  1. When will the first frost of the season occur??? Answer: .....The first hard freeze occurred on October 13th. All living plants now gone into hibernation.

  2. When will we get the first snow of the season??? Answer: .....The first snow started flying on Sunday, October 13th.

  3. How much snow will we get for the season??? Answer: .....For the season, we received 22.5 inches of snow. This is one hell of a lot of snow to receive over fall. Remember, winter per say hasn't even started yet!!!!!

  4. For how much longer will we be able to wear shorts and other summer like clothes??? Answer: .....haven't been able to wear shorts since October 13th.

  5. Will Nebraska be in the College Playoff's???? Answer: .....Somehow, Nebraska managed to win the Big 12 North Division. This meant they had to play Texas for the Big 12 Conference Title. Needless to say they lost 13-12. But, surprisingly, it was a very good game. Nebraska then went on to play Arizona in the Holiday Bowl....they won 33-0. If only they could have played like this for the rest of the season!!!!

  6. What will be the body bag count from Iraq???? Answer: .....The current body count, as of December 21st 2009, is 4,373, with a total allies count of 4,691. While the fatality rate has decreased (thank god), there is still a constant stream of body bags from Iraq.

  7. What will be the body bag count from Afghanistan???? Answer: .....A total of 960 US fatalities up until December 21st, 2009. This is out of a total of 1,588 fatalities for the NATO led forces/allies.

  8. How will the Iraqi government be functioning. Will it be inclusive, sectarian or absolute bloody chaos???? Answer: .....They are doing remarkably well. This is one author who is more than willing to admit that he had been wrong about the current government. Mind you, it is still rent by ethnic and religious divisions, but they are doing remarkably well. Lets keep our  fingers crossed.

  9. How many hurricane's will we have this season??? Answer: .....This year was a very quiet year as far as hurricanes go. There were no hurricane landfalls over the entire season. Amazing!!!!

  10. What will the US economy look like at the end of the season??? Answer: .....To put it mildly, the economy sucks. While the massive job layoffs may have finished, no one is hiring. The unemployment level is officially quotes at some 10%, while the unofficial rate is often quoted at some 17%. The bailouts for the banks has kept them solvent but, as usual, there has been nothing done for the actual worker.

But wait, more than these questions will be answered (and I have no clue as to what other questions will be answered) by the end of Fall!!!!.

Anyway, here are the Fall/Autumn activities from the Burton's of Omaha....

Saturday, October 31, 2009 Halloween

The annual "spook" a thon. Where shall Lisa and the webmaster be and what shall we be doing. All you need to know is that you need to stock up on candy for the "trick or treaters". This may seem to be a bizarre ritual, but it's an annual right of passage. And, it's something you wouldn't want to miss for the world!!!

This year's Halloween was particularly quiet. Lisa and the webmaster spent the entire day at home. We did have quite a few trick or treaters. Actually, we were both surprised by the large number of trick or treaters...we thought that all the kids in our neighborhood had either grown up or left the area. However, we were proven to be wrong. The rest of the evening was spent watching all the crappy B grade horror flicks that seem to get shown at this time of year.

And that was our annual "spook" a thon for 2009.....

And on rolls Fall 2009

Tuesday, November 3, 2009:  Election Day

The annual "pick a candidate to vote for" day. This year will be dominated by local issues and candidates. There are no congressional seats up for grabs, so it's whatever local issues are important. This year was no different

But, it's also the running of the annual Melbourne Cup in Melbourne, Australia. The webmasters prediction is that a horse will win....

Thursday, November 26, 2009Thanksgiving

Ahh...gobblers day. Not a good time of year to be a turkey. You definitely now that Fall is upon you with a vengeance when Turkey Day arrives. You also know that Christmas is not too far around the corner....which means that the annual shopping frenzy is about to begin!!!! Millions of people in crowded malls....what a treat!!!. This is also the busiest travel period of the year, eclipsing Christmas with some 38.3 million Americans traveling more than 50 miles over the Thanksgiving period.....including some 25 million airline passengers. Needless to say, the airports will be crowded, made even more chaotic with the new carry-on baggage requirements and with airlines charging up the wazoo for checked luggage.

How will we spend Thanksgiving 2009. Given past history, we'll most likely be here in Omaha, but one never can tell....
